Women Converge (“we”, “us”, “our”) organises the Women Converge conference and runs this website. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we protect it, and the choices you have. We handle personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA).
Who we are
Women Converge is a women’s conference and community organised by the Rivers Women Unite Organization (RWUOG), based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. For the purposes of the NDPA, we are the data controller of the personal information described in this policy.
Information we collect
- Registration details. Information you give us when you register, such as your name, email address, phone number and any other details the registration form asks for.
- Messages and enquiries. If you call, message or WhatsApp us, we receive your phone number and whatever you choose to tell us.
- Photos and video. Images and recordings taken at our events. See section 5 of our Terms & Conditions.
- Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting and security tools may record your IP address, browser and device type, and the pages you visit. We use this to keep the site running and secure.
- Your language choice. Saved in your own browser (see “Cookies, local storage and fonts” below).
Please share only what you are comfortable sharing. We do not ask for sensitive personal data such as health, religion or financial details for registration.
How we use your information
- To process your registration and confirm your place at the event.
- To send you event details, updates, reminders and follow-up messages.
- To plan venue capacity, seating, safety and logistics.
- To answer your questions and requests.
- To share highlights of our events, including photos and video, and to tell you about future Women Converge gatherings.
- To keep our website and systems secure, prevent misuse and fix problems.
- To meet our legal obligations.
Our legal bases for using it
Under the NDPA we need a lawful basis for using personal data. We rely on:
- Your consent, for example when you register or agree to receive updates. You can withdraw it at any time.
- Our legitimate interests, such as running a safe, well-organised event, securing our website and sharing event highlights, balanced against your rights and interests.
- Legal obligation, where the law requires us to keep or share information.
Cookies, local storage and fonts
- This page does not use advertising or tracking cookies.
- It saves your chosen language in your browser’s local storage so you do not have to pick it again. You can clear this any time in your browser settings.
- Our wider website and hosting may use essential cookies that are needed for security and for the site to work.
- To display text in our chosen typefaces, your browser requests fonts from Google Fonts, which means Google receives your IP address.
If we add analytics or other tools that use cookies, we will update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with:
- Service providers who help us run the website and event, such as hosting, email, SMS and WhatsApp messaging, registration tools, and venue or security staff where needed. They may only use your information to help us.
- Authorities, where we are legally required to do so.
- Sponsors and partners, only if you have agreed. Otherwise we may share general, non-identifying figures such as the number of attendees.
Transfers outside Nigeria
Some of the services we use, such as Google or WhatsApp, may process information on servers outside Nigeria. Where that happens, we take reasonable steps to make sure your information stays protected as the NDPA requires.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes above, including planning follow-up and future editions of the event, and to meet legal requirements. After that, we delete or anonymise it. You can ask us to delete your information sooner.
How we protect it
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), restricted access to registration data and regular software updates. No system is completely secure, so if you suspect your information has been misused, please tell us straight away.
Your rights
Under the NDPA you have the right to:
- be told how your information is used;
- access the information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct anything that is wrong or out of date;
- ask us to delete your information or restrict how we use it;
- object to our use of your information, including for marketing;
- receive your information in a portable format, where applicable;
- withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what we did before you withdrew it.
To use any of these rights, contact us using the details below. If you are not happy with how we handle your information, you can also complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
Children
Our website and registration are not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18 without the consent of a parent or guardian. If you believe we have, please contact us and we will delete it.
Links to other sites
Our website links to services such as Google Maps, WhatsApp and social media. These have their own privacy practices, and we are not responsible for them. Please read their policies before sharing information.
Changes to this policy
